Books I’ve Read in 2006
1.
A Million Little Pieces by James Frey
This book is INTENSE!!!! I mean, the first page throws you right into a scene where the guy wakes up on an airplane with his front teeth missing and a hole in his cheek. Yuck! But see, he’s addicted to crack…and alcohol…and meth…and a variety of other substances. Someone put him on a plane to send him to rehab. It’s a serious page-turner and unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Here’s a description from the editors at Random House. Yeah, the part where he goes to the dentist to get his teeth fixed and a root canal…sans anesthesia or pain killers…I had to skim that part. It had me squirming in my seat.
It’s an intense story. And it’s a true one at that. Definitely not sugar-coated like most of the books in Oprah’s club. If you enjoyed Lucky and/or The Basketball Diaries, then you’ll probably enjoy this one!
I saw a woman reading it at the booth next to mine at a restaurant last week. When she was packing up to leave, I asked her if it was good, since I was preparing to start it in the next day or so. She said, “Yeah, but it’s INTENSE. Lots of bad language. Oh my.” She was right. I’m almost halfway through it. Can’t put it down. Though, I have found it’s not the best before-bed reading material.
