I want to work for the Man
I work at a Community College, which is run by the State of Colorado. My current position is now available as a State employee. Right now I’m working under a more temporary classification and my boss only has authorization to change one person’s classification to the more permanent title of State Classified. Needless to say, I’m applying for this position.
It’s weird though…the position I’m applying for is the position I currently hold. If I get the State job, I won’t get much more money (maybe at most $1 more per hour) but I will get (what I hear is) the plushy State benefits. I’m doing it for the status, I guess.
But I have to compete. Which is something I HATE to do. I know of at least one of my co-workers who is applying for this same position. As far as I know, we are pretty much equal as far as education and experience. The main thing going for me is my attendance is way better than hers…at least in the last 10 months since I started! That girl misses, on average, one day per week. And yet, the only thing against me is that she’s extremely chummy with our current boss. The silver lining to that issue: boss is retiring at the end of the year and is already preparing for her departure. One can only hope she will keep that in mind as she assists in the decision process (she’s not the only one who decides). So we’ll see.
It only took me four hours to write, re-write and then TYPE the damned application. Add on another 30 minutes it took me to get our fax machine to send it and I’m SPENT!
Say a prayer. Do a rain dance. Wish me luck and whathaveyou!
